overflowing recipes

if you're like me, then may find yourself lurking in the magazine aisle in barnes & noble only to find a recipe in some obscure magazine that you wouldn't normally look at and then wham - you've purchased it and you don't even know how it happened.  no, that's only me?  then you probably find yourself clipping recipes from a magazine, newspaper, or printing off the internet.  and they are probably all stuffed in some drawer not getting used.  well not anymore!  enter, my recipe binder.

mine is 3 inches and i have 21 categories.  its kind of intense.  i spent days deciding what categories i wanted.  i asked ryan.  i asked my friends.  i asked google.  and finally i came up with these :

favorites
basics
appetizers & tidbits
beverages
breads
soups & chili
salads & dressings
sandwhiches & spreads
pastas & casseroles
poultry
meat
fish & seafood
sides
grilling
slow cooking
miscellaneous
cookies
cakes
cake pops
pies & cobblers
other sweet stuff

i'm a crummy photographer but you can see my master piece at work here.  i printed lablels and made my own tabs.  if i find a new recipe i pull it from its source and store in the pocket until i have more to file.  i clean up the edges using my paper cutter, punch the holes, and then file away.  i told you my binder was intense.

how do you handle your clipped recipes?  do you think i missed a category in my binder?  lol.

better late than never, but i'm linking to :

  1. That is impressive! I so need to do something like that because they are everywhere but I have not had the self-discipline to do it. You are an inspiration!

  2. Wow! This is intense. I have a recipe book that I just write or paste the recipes into once I've made them and liked them. The sections were already pre-divided, I think there are 6 - appetizers, meat, seafood, sides, desserts, baking? I think. It works pretty well for me. I put clippings "to try" in the front and then move them into the actual book if I like them. =)

  4. fabulous idea! I'm totally the person who prints recipes out and just shoves them in a cabinet. That and I forward a million to my email and they just sit there because I've forgotten that I have them. I might have to try this recipe folder!

  5. You are the organization queen! I might be stealing your category list.

  7. I do this too, and it took me days to make. Although it is seriously in need of a makeover, as it gets a lot of use. I also need to write a few recipes down, and throw some away that I never use. Love the papers you used.

  8. You are amazing, Kristen! I just email myself the recipe and keep it in a folder within my email program. I should do a blog post on what my mom creates. She takes and prints a fancy photo of all her meals and pastes it next to the recipe inside a plastic sheet cover. She has more time on her hands than I do...

  9. AGAIN, you forget to acknowledge the source of this idea ... Me! Didn't you see mine and just decide to make a jazzy version?

Yours looks great. Maybe you can make me one too- for when I have a house with a kitchen of my own. Or just a house with a hot plate and a dorm fridge. :)

  10. Wow- that is a lot of categorize, do you double list things? Like can one be both a favorite and bread? My mom made a set of two cookbooks for my sister and I when we got our own apartments, it has all our family recipes. I just add to that as I find new ones. I only file the ones I've tried and liked, anything I want to try gets sorted by type into a file box.

  11. Okay I love that binder - it's very Monica Gellar! I have an overstuffed folder and a folder on my computer with recipes....I think I need to step up my organization skills in the recipe department.
